Biography

A newspaper article published after her death states: On the certificate for her first marriage— to a Dr. Henry, who is believed to have died in America —Mrs. Johnson gave the name Magdalena Gertrude de Vare. Be fore her death she affirmed that her parents were Alfred de Vare and Magdalena Gertrude Bensusan.[1]

Magdalena married Jarvis B Johnson in 1909 in Tenterfield, New South Wales.[2]


Magdalena, child of Alfred De Lara & Magdalena Gertrude Penpuson, died on 14 June 1941 in Queensland.[3]

Her death and subsequent coronial inquest attracted much media attention.[4]

Research Notes

In 1954, Magdalena's cousin Doris de Lara of Southampton placed a missing relatives notice in the newspaper. She hadn't heard from Magdalen since 1910.[5]
